Barkcloth

ao is committed through practice-led research to exploring future avenues for plant-based colour. One avenue is the exploration of bark cloth which Karen leads.

As part of this research Karen's study of barkcloth addresses the goal of zero waste. In recognition of barkcloth's value, all off-cuts are saved.  One strand of the research utilised the bark cloth off-cuts to create a natural dye.  As a result of soaking the bark cloth, an extract is produced that can be used to dye fabrics and fibres. Using the dye in conjunction with scoured and mordanted fabrics and fibres creates a pink/tan colour.  In this case used for both piece dyed fabric and embroidery threads.
