Tree Research 1

ao research:

Regenerative colour from trees

ao’s Emma is involved in ongoing practice-based research focussing on the concept of using naturally occurring agricultural tree waste to create regenerative, viable, marketable natural dye.

During the first 2020 lockdown where her base unexpectedly changed from London to Somerset she discovered that she had access to an outdoor research lab.

Woodland, countryside and a palace heritage garden in a 2 mile radius of home provided the perfect bio material for analysis. It all began with a brainstorm of mainly woodland plant material before focussing on trees.

Images below give a snapshot of the first colour fastness trials during this lockdown period. From her initial findings it became apparent that many of the colours, especially from trees met the required colour fastness ratings needed for the fashion industry.
